Balıkesir Cumhuriyet Meydanı
Overview
Balıkesir Cumhuriyet Meydanı is envisioned as a new civic heart for the city — transforming an existing passage zone into a vibrant public space for gathering, resting, meeting, waiting, shopping, and everyday social life. The project reinterprets Balıkesir's traditional arasta and courtyard culture through a contemporary architectural language. A timber canopy and elevated public deck create a strong pedestrian spine while forming shaded, semi-open spaces beneath for exhibitions, temporary events, seating, social interaction, and commercial activities. The design strengthens connections between important surrounding elements including the mosque, railway station, commercial areas, and public facilities, creating different urban experiences along each edge of the square. Pedestrian priority, accessibility, greenery, water elements, natural materials, and flexible public spaces form the core of the proposal. The result is a warm and inclusive urban environment designed not only for movement, but for people to stop, interact, and become part of the city's everyday life.
